Rafiki, meaning friend in Swahili

Rafiki, meaning friend in Swahili, is a puppet controlled by Devan that took center-stage on the second day of VBS camp. The devotional for Day 2 (Saturday) was Luke 11:28, reminding us that those that hear and obey the word of God are blessed. After worship, Jack was the narrator while Devan and Taylor taught a lesson on faith illustrating the David and Goliath story. Mimicking the American game of rock, paper, scissors, the children, in mass confusion, engaged with each other playing tembo (elephant), simba (lion) and panya (mouse).

After lunch, Devan led the water games, where most got wet trying to fill buckets of water using a sponge and water guns. Devan, and Jack once again, was the target. Fully drenched, they enjoyed the screaming and laughter as the children “pushed the game rules”! Gloria was in the arts and crafts room designing a prayer wheel for the children to assemble and color. The Prayer wheels were a huge success and it warmed our hearts when we saw the children using them on Day 3 (more of that to come in the next blog). We noticed children journaling, in both English and Swahili.

Dinner for the team was back at the college, where I had leftovers, cleaning out the fridge”. Nightly debriefing, then off to bed.
