African-style church service

African-style church service, on Sunday morning, was a phenomenal experience! The Holy Spirit filled the air in the open-walled, cement-floored pavilion. Talented young musicians and colorfully-dressed camp leaders led a joyful worship with choreographed dance steps. Giving God all the glory in our Father’s house, halfway around the world, reminds me that we are all children of The King. It’s a bond of love and faith.

Pastor Moses, from Hope of The Nations, delivered a sermon based on Psalm 23, in English with a translation into Swahili. Two skits were performed; one from Taylor about King Josiah, then Gloria and Susan used a comparison of a designer’s instructions with following our creator’s directions as an example of obedience.

Before lunch, the children, in groups with their team leaders, shared thoughts about Psalm 119:34, the daily devotional. While lunch was being prepared by the Mama’s, Tammy, Taylor and Susan were able to take pictures of their smiling faces and savor the smell of cabbage and donuts being fried. Sorry, you can’t enjoy that aroma with us or the taste of a fresh, crisp donut coming out of the oil.

A variety of games were played; human foose-ball, red light/green light and maneuvering through an obstacle course. Lou Ann taught trusting and following God with an activity that used two people; one blind-folded and the other leading that person through an obstacle course of chaires. The lesson is to keep your focus on God! She also taught the children to hand-sign the words trust and obey. The children were excited over getting slap bracelets that they were able to color. Jack, along with Moses as a translator, helped the children make a wood-cross necklace that was surrounded with colored beads; purple (for our king), yellow (heaven), gray (sin), red (blood), blue (water baptism) and clear for our new, clean hearts.

Sadly, on our return back to the college, we had a short detour to the local clinic for a little boy, Kisubi, that was running a high fever. We learned the next day, he had typhoid and malaria. Please join us in prayer that he responds to treatment and is fully healed, in the name of Jesus.

Tomorrow, we plan to return to camp to say good-bye to these children that have blessed us these past few days.

Susan Mister, Team Blogger

I would like to give a shout out to Susan, our team blogger. She carries her journal with her to take notes throughout the day on what she wants to blog in the evening when we get back to the college. All of the pictures I add to the blog are taken by the team, and we have many of them.

Tammy Stone, Team Leader

Our prayer is that SVCC will be a place where you and your family can grow and connect. No matter where you are in life, our desire is to equip you with the truth of the gospel, and provide an environment that fosters a deeper relationship with God and His Church.
